I work with all genders. In my practice I find that so many have learned to utilize the protective strategy of suppressing emotion. There is so much I want to say here. So much I want to get curious about..like how the system of patriarchy has not only wounded women but also men. I love the article by jemima.atar at @newthinking_mag on how patriarchy affects men’s mental health, “Patriarchy is an assault on women that is engendered through the wounding of men.” I don’t have enough space here but would love to have conversation around this topic. Is it serving you now? I want to chat about how emotions serve a purpose. They are infomation. Let me say it again…Emotions serve as information to what we need or what action we should take to first survive and also to thrive. Anger- tells us we that our boundary has been crossed and that we need to take some form of action to stand up for ourselves (or someone else). Fear- are we in danger? get the hell out if needed. F/F/F/F Embarrassed- if you break a social norm..this keeps us in the group (collective survival). Sadness- tells us we need to seek comfort, and also that we have lost something very important to us. Disgust- causes us to vomit if we invest something harmful to us. Joy and other pleasant emotions- let us know that we are doing something right. I know it can be scary…but if safe and you have good grounding, go ahead and get curious. There are times when I ask my clients to face the nearest wall, as close as possible. I then ask them how much of that wall they can see in that moment. Every time they answer, “Only a small spot.” I remind them that they still have the entire wall. Years later, they will look back and see this moment as a dot on the wall. When we are in fight or flight (sympathetic nervous system) we are not interested in connecting. Why the imperfect wall? In choosing the image and design for our website I was drawn to the imperfections in the background, the cracks in the wall, and the new growth shooting to light. We all have imperfections, wounds, scars, mistakes we have made…we all have stuff. Cracks, symbolizing those times when something must give, we can’t hold it all together, and/or we feel as though we might just break. Whatever that looks like for you, I see a Breaking Through. Like the new growth, a breaking open from old patterns of reacting or maybe striving that does not serve anymore. Old stories that we learned along the way, stories our brain made up to make sense of the world and help us survive, and stories that have been reinforced over time. A breaking open to a new chapter where there is the possibility for growth or space for acceptance to just be you... Our thoughts can trick us into isolation (i.e, They don't like me; They think they are better than me; I don't fit in; I am better off alone; I don't have the energy to get out; etc.). Don't get hooked in the story. Reach out and find connection where you can. Self-regulation is great.
